Chattanooga has been the center of many historical events, ranging from Paleolithic Native Americans to Civil War battles. History buffs shouldn’t miss a stop at the The Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel, a converted train station that served all trains traveling south from 1909 to 1970. Spend some time walking around Ross’ Landing, which was the origin of the Trail of Tears, as well as the Riverwalk, which includes several significant Civil War sites. For a more in-depth experience, travel up to the popular Lookout Mountain, where the historic battle, called the “Battle Above the Clouds” took place. While there, don’t miss your chance to ride up the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. Enjoy the feeling of the breathtaking 72.7 % grade of the track near the top, making it the steepest passenger railway in the world, and reward yourself with stunning views at the top. While there, you may also want to take the time to visit Ruby Falls and Rock City Gardens.
Chattanooga has long been known as a premier outdoor destination, and is well known for rock climbing, road and mountain biking, hiking, white-water rafting, hang gliding and more. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Tennessee River Gorge, one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country, from one of the many riverboat cruises in the area.
