While we’re enjoying watching the leaves fall and the temperature getting lower by the day, we know that winter is just around the corner. We can’t think of a better place to get away for winter break than at our very own Whitestone Inn. While there are a variety of ways to relax at our bed and breakfast, we are also a short drive away from Knoxville, as well as easy drives to destinations such as Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, the Smoky Mountains, Asheville, and Chattanooga! Find some of our favorite activities that are an easy day trip from Whitestone Inn.
Smoky Mountain Winterfest in Sevierville (November 13, 2020 – February 22, 2021)
Winter is a special time to visit Sevierville and the neighboring cities of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The area is already beautiful, but during Winterfest, you’ll find more than 15 million lights across a 25-mile stretch. With the gorgeous holiday decorations comes great activities for you, your significant other, and your family to get into the holiday spirit.
Sevierville’s annual Christmas Parade held on December 5th is a great, safe opportunity for the family to bring in the holidays. One of our favorite activities during Winterfest is Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland, a 1.5 mile drive through LED Christmas light and music experience. You can visit Shadrack’s from November 6, 2020 – January 3, 2021.
Sevierville also has great holiday shopping opportunities. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. Find a local shop to take home a piece of the Smoky Mountain area or visit Tanger Outlets to visit their 150 name brand outlet shops and get some of your holiday shopping done.
Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snow Tubing at Ober Gatlinburg
While you’re in the Gatlinburg area, head to Ober Gatlinburg for some exciting winter adventures. The facility is conveniently located close to all of the great shops and restaurants of downtown Gatlinburg. Whether you’re an avid skier or snowboarder, or just looking for an easy thrill like tubing, you’re sure to have fun at Ober. In addition to their winter sport activities, Ober Gatlinburg offers indoor ice skating year-round. But what’s more fun than ice skating during winter?
Aside from the great winter sport activities, Ober Gatlinburg offers even more fun including an aerial tramway, an indoor kidzone arcade, scenic chairlift, ice bumper cars, mini golf, the ski mountain coaster, and more. With so many things to do, you’re sure to have a fun-filled day at Ober.
Holiday Shopping in Downtown Knoxville and Market Square
Shopping in downtown Knoxville and Market Square is always a great experience, but we love it even more during the holiday season. From December 1, 2020 – January 3, 2021, shoppers can enjoy more than 100,000 lights and decorations throughout the downtown area while they get their shopping done at all the local shops and boutiques.
While you’re shopping, warm up with a cup of coffee from one of the multiple local coffee shops such as K Brew, Old City Java, or Coffee & Chocolate. You can also plan your shopping trip around a delicious meal at one of the great local restaurants like Emelia, OliBea, Kaizen, A Dopo, and more.
Day Trip to Chattanooga for Holiday Festivities
We love visiting Chattanooga, as it is an easy day-trip from Whitestone Inn. Hop on I-75 South, and you’ll be there in under 2 hours. Once you arrive in Chattanooga, there are plenty of holiday activities to enjoy! Whether you want to gaze at gorgeous Christmas lights, get even more shopping marked off your list, or even meet Santa Claus himself, you’ll find it in Chattanooga.
The Chattanooga Holiday Market at the Chattanooga Convention Center is a great place to find unique, handcrafted gifts for everyone on your holiday list. The event is on the first 3 weekends of December and features free admission. The market showcases more than 200 local food vendors, artists, and crafters for you to enjoy. In addition to local food and shopping, there are daily activities for the whole family to get into the holiday spirit, including live music and a Lodge Cast Iron Bake-Off!
After you’ve enjoyed the festivities of the holiday market and the sun has set, make your way up Lookout Mountain to the Enchanted Garden of Lights at Rock City. Rock City transforms during the winter months into a holiday winter wonderland. With thousands, if not millions, of lights, you’re sure to be in awe and feel enveloped in the holiday spirit! While some of the activities have been adjusted due to the pandemic, there’s still plenty of activities to enjoy. Stroll through the Arctic Kingdom, look up at the soaring 43-foot trees of lights in the Magic Forest, and even meet Santa Claus!
